United Insurance Company of America Pays $37, 500 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Lawsuit
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged United Insurance Company of America (UICA) with discriminating against an employee with a disability. The company offered the individual, who is a recovering drug addict, a job conditioned upon his passing a drug test. When he failed the test and submitted a letter from his treatment provider explaining that he was in a treatment program, UICA withdrew its job offer. It violates the [Americans with Disabilities Act][1] to discriminate against an employee because an employer thinks the individual has a disability.
