So a study published in the Journal Central Nervous System (CNS) Drugs [3] was put together to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-depressants against Fibromyalgia. The theshold of beneficial effect was set rather low : 30% decrease of pain.
Here is a summary of the results:
* _**SNRIs (Such as Duloxetine,Milcinipran, etc)**_: The size of the effects on pain, depression and quality of life were small and the one on sleep not substantial.
72/198 (36.4%) patients with SSRIs and 40/194 (20.6%) patients with placebo reported a**_ 30% pain reduction_**
* **Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)_ such as Amitriptiline, Doxepin, etc_**: The effect sizes on pain and sleep were moderate and the ones on fatigue and HRQOL were small. 140/290 (48.3%) patients with TCAs and 70/252 (27.8%) patients with placebo reported a_** 30% pain reduction and a 20-30% dropout from treatment**_ [3]

Fibromyalgia Drugs: How Effective?
Looks dismall to me , particularly considering the side effects: 20-30% dropout

The SSRI class of antidepressants also is absent from study [3]. So even though, some study claim pain reduction the quantification might still be in the 30% pain reduction.
This drug list is about antidepressants, not anti-epileptic drugs. We reported on those in another post [4]. Sorry to say, the results were slightly better, reaching 30-50% pain reduction. And those too carry substantial side effects with 20% dropout.
